Electrical Question from William about Oven Wiring

Received from William a Student in San Diego, CA

[ad#block]Question: I had to replace a kitchen electric stove. The stove that was removed which was wired into the wall. When the new stove was installed, a service charge to install a receptacle was added for the new stove. Isn’t it mandatory for a kitchen cooking appliance to have a receptacle? If so, can you tell me what reference to look in to prove it to my landlord? Thank you.

Additional Comments: great website, but I wish there were references to the national electric code in the descriptions.

Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your electrical question.
Hey William, I understand your position. The new code does require an outlet for a free standing stove. However some older wiring practices did wire directly to the stove. I believe your issue may be one with the landlord. Discuss it nicely and they may compensate you. I don’t know the legal ramifications of this, but attitude is everything.
