Electrical Question about Replacing a Fixture with a Ceiling Fan Wiring
Received from Patrick a Homeowner in Chicago, IL
[ad#block]Question: I am replacing a two bulb light fixture with a ceiling fan/light. I am having trouble with the wires from the fan to the junction box, as it seems there are more wires from the ceiling. From the junction box, I have 1 black, 1 purple, 1 orange, and 2 whites. From the fan I have 1 white, 1 black, 1 blue. How do these connect up properly?

Thanks for your electrical question.
Hi Patrick – Due to the wire colors you are identifying it sounds like your home may have conduit installed, not romex cable type wiring. So the objective is to identify the incoming power source, out-going power, and which is the switch leg coming from the wall switch. If you are simply replacing an existing ceiling fixture then it should be straight forward – one wire from the switch, one neutral or spliced neutrals, and the ground(s). The other wiring up in the ceiling fixture box have to do with the circuit distribution and should not be disturbed. If there is provision for a second switch then this needs to be verified.
Please verify that your ceiling fixture box is rated for the weight of your ceiling fan. The provided link which was sent in your reply email and the link to the ceiling fan area of the website will provide you with detailed instructions and wiring diagrams for ceiling fans.
