Electrical Question: Why does my electric furnace trip the circuit breaker when it is turned on?
My electrical wiring project involves Tripping Breaker for a 220 Volt Electric Heater.
- I have a Revolv Stylecrest RP7RE-048K. The air conditioning works fine. When I turn on the furnace it trips the 50 AMP circuit breaker at the back of the electric meter. There is a 60 amp breaker just outside the unit that I think is being used as a switch to open the power near the unit. The unit is wired with #8 AWG wire from the switch to the unit. I don’t know the AWG from the 50 amp breaker to the switch. The AC guys said the wire gauge should be #6. The AC guys can’t figure out why the 50 amp breaker is tripping. The tech spec for the RPC1448 says it is 50 amp. Could the breaker be bad? The AC guys disconnected one of the heating elements and it is OK for now. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
- Follow Up: I should have mentioned that it takes about 10-15 minutes before the breaker trips. Maybe that is when the 2nd heater energizes?Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciate it.

220 Volt Heating Element Causing a Tripping Breaker
From what has been described in this question, I would focus on the heating element that has been disconnected. The wiring to the element should be inspected for any discoloration or a faulty connection. If there is nothing wrong with the wires or where the wires connect for the element then the element is most likely at fault. It is possible that a portion of the heating element has shorted to a grounded surface of the furnace which has caused the 50 amp breaker to trip off when the furnace is turned on and is calling for heat. The power to the electric furnace should be turned off and the heating element assembly should be removed and inspected. If the heating element has any irregularity, or there are signs that an electric arc has occurred then the heating element will need to be replaced.
Also, the wire size for this specific furnace should be compared to the installation manual to make sure the circuit wiring is correct.
