Electrical Code for Stapling Electrical Wire for the Home
Background: John, a Homeowner from Huntsville, Alabama
[ad#block]Question: Per code, staples are to be placed within 8 inches of a receptacle box or 12 inches when the box has clamps.
Is there an exception to the code when running new wire through an existing finished wall, Old-work?
For example: running 12-2 wire up a wall from the crawl space to reach a new receptacle installation.
Unless I tear out the sheet rock, there is no way to staple the new cable at the required distances.
Additional Comments: I really like the website. Lots of very helpful information.
Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your electrical question John. If the new wiring is installed into a wall that is not accessible then the cable cannot be stapled. Install the wiring accordingly as accessibility allows.
