Understanding 240 Volt Circuit Requirements
Electrical Question: I have a 240volt outlet for my dryer.
- Can I modify it so it will be a double outlet and run my 240volt electric oven also?
- I will hire someone to do this, but I want to make sure I know what I’m asking for.
Thanks.

240Volt Dryer Circuit
Application: Installing a 240 Volt Oven or Dryer Circuit.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced, Best installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, electric drill, auger bits and extension cord.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install electrical circuit wiring.
Precaution: Identify the panel circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring. Working in an electric panel is dangerous due to arc flash hazards and the possibility of electric shock.
Notice: Installing additional circuit wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
240Volt Oven and Dryer Circuit Requirements
- A dedicated 240 circuit is required for the electric dryer, and a dedicated 240 volt circuit is required for the electric oven.
- Combining the electric dryer and the electric oven on the same circuit will cause the circuit to overload.
- The circuit breaker size may not be increased in sized either as that would most likely cause a house fire.
- The solution is to have an additional dedicated 240 volt circuit installed specifically for your oven.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation. The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets.. The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use. |

How to Wire a Dryer Motor Switch | Convert a 3 Phase Motor to Single Phase |
I have a GE Dryer motor number 5kh26gj116t that has three wires from the motor, a blue a orange and a black. I need to know which wire is hot ground and neutral so I can hook it up to run on a cord because I plan on using the motor for a different purpose. Thanks.
Hi Shane,
The GE Motor you have described is not a general purpose motor, and it is designed specifically for an electric dryer. The motor works with a external centrifigal switch which controls the power to the windings of the motor, and the wiring is integrated into other components of the dryer. Therefore the power connections would need to be traced and identified from the wiring diagram of your specific dryer. To sum it up, this may not be the best motor to use for an alternative application.
I hope this helps,
Dave
