    Hi Rich,
    From what you have described, the wire connections to the outlet are correct, however if the polarity is in fact reversed then the wiring of the outlet circuit should be examined to locate where the wiring has been reversed. This would fix the problem to all of the affected outlets and devices. An electrician should begin troubleshooting starting with the circuit at the electrical panel and then tracing the wiring from there as necessary until the problem is discovered and the corrections are made as required.

    I have a reverse polarity outlet. The black wire is on the brass screw, and the white wire on the silver screw. Can I reverse the wires and correct the problem? It has been this way for over three years.

    Hey Wade, how are you.
    I suspect a loose wire or splice with either the hot or neutral, and I would begin looking at the switch boxes where the lights do work. Depending on the age of the home, the outlets should be on a separate circuit and not part of the lighting or exhaust fan.

    My bathroom lightswitch for the light and fan all of a sudden didn’t work, at the same time the lightswitch and light for the toilet room (inside the same bathroom) went out. I checked the circuit breaker and turned it on and off, nothing happened.

    Here’s the weird part, the walk in closet light (in the SAMe bathroom) works, and the outlet’s near the sink all work?

    Please help!!

    Hi Electrical Novice,
    The information the electrician has provided you with is correct, however you must understand that the extra wire that is at the ceiling fan box was intended for controlling an optional light for the ceiling fan if you choose to have one, but you still have options if you wanted a ceiling fan with a light AND the recessed lights installed as well. The option would be to get a ceiling fan that would have a remote control which would operate both the ceiling fan speeds and the ceiling fan lighting functions. Choosing this option would enable you to control the ceiling fan functions from a remote control, and the wall switch box could have a light switch installed for the recessed lights, and the switch could be a dimmer switch as well if the recessed light fixtures were compatible with a dimmer.
    The power used for a typical ceiling fan light is the same power type as any other electrical circuit, and the added load of only three standard recessed lights would typically not cause the circuit to be overloaded. The electrician would understand what the available circuit capacity would be.
    So in summary, yes – this electrician is giving you correct information. Rarely will a certified electrician or licensed electrical contractor give bad advise. They have worked hard to earn their credentials, and rarely do they ever do anything that would compromise their position.

    Hi,
    I do not know anything about electrical wiring.
    I was looking to have 3-4 recessed lights added to a bedroom along with installing ceiling fan for which we already have a junction box installed. This is a new house and I approached the electrician that did electric work in our house to install the ceiling fan and recessed lights.
    He came in today to take a look at our ceiling fan model and he was suggesting that the ceiling fan junction box has a wire for the ceiling fan’s light that we could use for powering the recessed lights. He said that wire is usually meant for controlling the ceiling fan’s light with a switch on the wall. He said that this options would save some time and effort that would otherwise go into running a new wire from the recessed lights to the switch on the wall this way. He said we would have a switch for the ceiling fan on the top and one for the recessed light right under that.
    I am not very convinced that is the right option though for a couple of reasons.

    1. I thought the lights that come with the ceiling fans are usually low in capacity and I am not sure if that would be enough to power the 3 recessed cans.

    2. Is it really that hard for him to run and install a new wire from the recessed cans to the switch.

    3. Is this going to cause any problems or headaches down the line?

    He is scheduled to come in a couple of days so I really need your input and help. May be I am worrying unnecessarily, but I would like to know that from experts like you.
